Cemetery notes and/or description:
Founded in 1862 by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, Chestnut Hill Cemetery is one of the Mechanicsburg area's most historic landmarks. On June 28, 1863, when General Albert Jenkins marched his 700 or so cavalrymen through Mechanicsburg and demanded that the town surrender, the Cemetery was mistaken by Jenkins’ scouts for an entrenched military position.
From the conclusion of the Civil War until WW II the region's annual Memorial Day remembrance were held at the "historic Chestnut Hill Cemetery." A 1939 reference to the annual event indicates that the cemetery contains the remains of "121 Union Army veterans, two Spanish-American War volunteers and one veteran of the war with Mexico" (The Harrisburg Telegraph Newspaper ).
Notable memorials at the cemetery include US Congressman Theodore F. Singiser, who was also the Governor of Idaho; Dr Herbert E. Longenecker, President of Tulane University from 1960 to 1975; Dr Edmond E. Campbell, president of Irving College from 1891 to 1926; George S. Comstock, manufacturer and founder of the Engineers Club of Central PA; Rear Admiral Edwin Longnecker, whose Navy career extended from the Civil War until 1906; David W. Seidle, a manufacturer who provided the funds to establish Seidle Hospital; State Senator George H. Bucher; State Senator Alfred William Milleisen; State Rep. Raymond J. Shettel; State Rep. Harvey A. Surface, also professor of zoology at Ohio State, Cornell, Susquehanna Univ and PSU; Eli H. Cocklin, pioneer horticulturist; Alexander Ege, co-director of the Cumberland Valley Institute (now Methodist Children's Home); Davis C Singer, founder of the historic Singer Band.
