Edward W. Potteiger, 89, a lifelong Aurora resident, died at Provena Mercy Medical Center on Friday, July 22, 2005, after a brief illness. He was born April 16, 1916 to Jacob and Lydia (Zimbleman) Potteiger.
Ed graduated in 1934 from West Aurora High School, attended the University of Illinois, was a World War II veteran and was a partner in the meat department at Marshall's Groceries, with his father. He finished off his working career with his favorite job of all; working at the Old Second National Bank as head teller.
Ed was like no other. The relationships he formed with people were unique to everyone that knew him. If you lived in Aurora for any length of time, chances are you may have known Ed in some fashion and probably have a story to back it up. He loved, and was loved, by his family and friends.
Nothing mattered more to Ed than family. He always lived his life unwilling to compromise this value. He touched so many people in so many ways, it would be an impossible task to even scratch the surface of stories. Ed lived in Aurora all of his life and believed there was no better place to be. Ed had a passion for golf. If it was 1:00 PM during the week, you would find him "swinging the sticks." In particular, Wolf Run was his golf course of choice.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; his grandsons, Pete Smith of Chicago, and Rick and Jennifer Smith of Geneva; two great-grandsons, Max and Alex Smith; and two great-grandchildren on the way, Geneva; his son-in-law, Lee Smith and his wife, Susan of Grayslake; his sisters, Corine Jacobson of Bella Vista, AK, Kathleen Tice of Annapolis, MD; his father-in-law, Everett Harris of Davis, IL; his mother-in-law, Sara Harris of West Chicago; his sister-in-law, Kathy Strattman and husband Dale of Wichita, KS; brother-in-law, Mike Harris and his wife, Marilyn of South Beloit; and many nieces and nephews; and family friend, Joann Maxwell.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence Couve; his parents; a son, Eddie; and a daughter, Jenny Smith; his brother, Arnold; his sister, Elizabeth; his brothers-in-law, Evans Jacobson and Phil Tice; and sister-in-law, Helen Potteoger.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dagiantis, Dr. Carpenter, Dr. Schlessinger and the ICU nurses at Mercy Hospital for their loving care.
He will be deeply missed by many.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at 11 AM at The Healy Chapel, 332 W. Downer Place, Aurora. Visitation will be held Monday, July 25, 2005, from 3-7 PM at The Healy Chapel, Aurora. Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Savior Lutheran Church or the a charity of the donor's choice.
