Harold trained as a telegrapher at the Kaylor RR Depot. He worked for 27 years with the Milwaukee Railroad Company as a station operator at Mapleton, IA; then at Jefferson and Elk Point, SD. He worked as a station master in Scotland for 7 years and then moved to Kaylor in 1955 where he was the station master. When the Kaylor depot closed, he was the station agent at Springfield for 3 years, and then at Tripp for 2 years until 1967 when ill health forced his early retirement. He was a member of the Scotland Fire Department for many years and was a member of the Civil Defense during WWII
