    Ervin F. Claus, 83, of Grinnell died of lung cancer Nov. 20, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz.
    Funeral services at the Newburg-Chester United Church of Christ. Veterans rites conducted by the Ward-Paul American Legion Post, Gilman, with burial in Prairie View Cemetery.
    He was born Nov. 20, 1916, in Hornick, Iowa to Ben and Edith Weber Claus. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Holly Springs High School in 1936. Following his education he moved to California and worked for McDonald-Douglas Aircraft Co. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in Europe.
    He married Ferne Madill November 5, 1948. They farmed near Newburg until retiring in 1978 and then spent winters in Mesa, Arizona for 20 years, moving to Grinnell in 1994.
    Surviving are his wife, one brother Chester of Smithland; and three sisters, Altha Bos, Ela Nirenberg of Bend, Oregon, and Lucile Heinse of Anthon.
    He was preceded in death by his parents.

    Altha Edith Bos, 98, of Lawton, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2017 at Countryside Health Care Center. Services will be held 11:00 am, Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Banner Township Cemetery.
    Altha was born on May 4, 1919 on her parents farm near Lum Hollow Stock Farm, just east of Holly Springs, IA. She graduated from Holly Springs High School in 1936. On December 28, 1942, Altha was united in marriage to Stanley Bos. Stan was in the in the United States Army and after the wedding he was stationed in Alabama. Altha soon joined him and worked on the military base, trimming hats and packing coffee. Following his honorable discharge, they moved back to Iowa to raise their family, two daughters; Judy and Patricia. Stan passed away in 1979.
    Altha was a great seamstress, making doll clothes and outfits for her daughters. She loved the outdoors and spent twenty winters traveling with her sister, Elda and brother in law, Ron, which greatly enjoyed. Altha was a member of the German City Church.
    Survivors include her daughters, Judy (Ron) Bradley of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Patricia (Gary) Peters of Lawton; sisters, Elda (Ron) Nirenberg of Bend Oregon and Lucille (Ed) Heinse of Anthon; and sister in law, Evelyn Claus of Smithland, IA.
    Altha was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Chet and Ervin Claus.

    Chester A. "Chet" Claus, son of Benjamin Henry and Edith Minnie (Weber) Claus, was born July 6, 1923, on a farm near Holly Springs, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Friday, August 21, 2015, at his home near Smithland, Iowa at the age of 92.
    Chet attended school at Holly Springs and graduated with the Class of 1940.
    On July 14, 1945, Chet was united in marriage to Evelyn "Peg" Parkhill in South Sioux City, Nebraska. To this union two sons were born, Benny and Greg. The family made their home on different farms in the Holly Springs and Smithland area. Chet was a lifelong farmer. He retired from farming at age 62 but continued to help his son until age 82.
    Chet enjoyed playing cards, dancing, carpentry and barbecuing. He had served on the Little Sioux Township Committee for many years. Chet attended Smithland United Methodist Church.
    Chet is survived by his wife of 70 years, Evelyn "Peg" Claus of Smithland; two sons: Benny Claus (Jennifer) of Elk Point, South Dakota and Greg (Dawn) Claus of Smithland; four grandchildren: Brian Claus (Tina) of Omaha, Nebraska, Jeremy Claus (Dinah) of Omaha, Nebraska, Candy Van Roekel (Jeff) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Clinton Claus (Michelle Domer) of Hornick, Iowa; ten great grandchildren; three sisters: Altha Bos of Lawton, Iowa, Elda Nirenberg (Ron) of Bend, Oregon and Lucille Heinse (Ed) of Anthon, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
    Chet was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ervin Claus (Ferne) and one brother-in-law, Stan Bos.
