Clarence "Louver" Braunberger, 80, Fargo, ND formerly of Christine, ND died Monday, December 15, 2008 in his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Clarence was born on February 2, 1928 to Fred and Clara (Broechel) Braunberger in Minot, ND. He attended grade school in Raub and Garrison, ND. The family moved to Fargo in 1945 and he attended Fargo Central High School.
He returned to the western part of the state and worked on the construction of the Garrison Dam. In 1949, he moved back to Fargo and began working for Armour Company.
He was drafted during the Korean War and served from September of 1951 with the 6th Armored Division in Japan.
He married the love of his life, LaVonne Mae Lahren on June 1, 1951 in Webster, SD. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and returned to Fargo and resumed working for Armour until the plant closed in 1958. Clarence started his home-based auto body repair shop in his garage at 11th St. and 7 Ave. S. in Fargo. He relocated Clarence's Louver and Body Shop to 13th Ave. S. in 1961. He semi-retired in 1991 when his sons, Glenn and Wayne took over the shop. He continued to oversee the day to day operation of the business until the family closed the shop in 2002.
Clarence was very family oriented and a Boy Scout leader (Olivet 215) while his sons were growing up. He enjoyed car restoration as a hobby and was a member of the Hot Rod Car Club and the Horseless Carriage Club of America. He also belonged to the Eagles and to the American Legion Fargo Post 2. A highlight for Clarence was being inducted into the ND Auto Body Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife: LaVonne; two sons: Wes (Mary) Braunberger, Fargo, ND, Glenn Braunberger, Christine, ND; daughter: Joy Cossette, Fargo, ND; sister: Agnes (Dwain) Detmer, LaMarque, TX; two brothers: Eugene Braunberger, Wickenburg, AZ, David Braunberger, Hesperia, CA; 12 grandchildren: Shane (Jenny) Cossette and their children: Stephanie and Brandon of West Fargo, ND, Stacey (Matt) Davis and their children: Ashely and Caleb of North Pole, AK, Robert "Bobby" (Wendy) Cossette and their child: Lilly, of Glyndon, MN, Sarah (Jake) Halvorson, Dilworth, MN, Nicholas "Nick" Braunberger, Fargo, ND, Katie Braunberger, Fargo, ND, Joseph Braunberger, Fargo, ND, Ryan Braunberger, Sioux Falls, SD, Stephanie (Kyle) Hohertz, Fargo, ND, Adam Braunberger, Fargo, ND, Richard Braunberger, Fargo, ND, Chad (Sheila) Braunberger and their daughter: Sadie of Fargo, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son: Wayne Braunberger.
Memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley and First United Methodist Church, Fargo.
