KALISPELL - Ronald Joseph Pritzkau, 84, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Heritage Place in Kalispell.
"Red" was born May 25, 1915, in Napoleon, N.D., the son of German emigrants who migrated from Russia to North Dakota in 1880. They homesteaded near Napoleon, where they raised several children.
Red graduated from Napoleon High School in 1934. Jobs being scarce during the Depression, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and worked in a camp near Northwood, N.D., where he met his wife, Henrietta Schol. He and Henrietta were married Jan. 18, 1937, with Red working as a farmhand for his wife's parents.
Asked to return to the CCCs, Red transferred to Missoula, leaving his wife and three children in North Dakota. When the CCCs were disbanded, he decided to stay in Montana. His wife and children came by train to Missoula, and Montana became their new home.
Red then went to work for Northern Pacific Railroad as a fireman. He continued this job until joining the Navy, serving until the war was over.
After the war, he went to work for H.O. Bell in Missoula as an auto mechanic. Always looking for greener pastures, Red moved to Plains in 1947, working for Vacura Motors, then to Camas Prairie in 1948, working in a lumber camp.
The family moved to Hot Springs in 1949, where Red set up his own mechanic shop. By this time, his family had grown to include six children.
At this time, Red followed an opportunity to work for the Forest Service in Thompson Falls. The job was discontinued and he went to work for an auto shop downtown. Red worked as a mechanic for many years, and the family grew to include three more children.
Red was an avid fan of the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks, never missing a basketball or football game.
In 1968, Red moved the family to Seattle, where he worked at a Ford garage until retirement.
He and Henrietta enjoyed their retirement, traveling and visiting their many children, grandchildren and friends. In 1987, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Spanaway, Wash., with many family members and friends in attendance.
The Pritzkaus moved to an adult apartment following Red's heart surgery five years ago, from which he never fully recovered.
He is survived by his wife Henrietta of Kalispell; eight living children, Myrna, John, Gary, Kaye, Carol, Nancy, Laurie and Peggy; and a brother, Philo Pritzkau of Leeds, Mass.
A daughter, Janice, passed away in 1959. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren (the oldest was killed in a tragic accident in 1998) and 17 great-grandchildren.
Red will be greatly missed for his constant sense of humor.
Pastor Gaylund Olson will officiate at 2 p.m. graveside services at Thompson Falls City Cemetery on Saturday, May 6. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Coffelt-Bunch Funeral Home in Thompson Falls.
