Hangs Up Sythe to Take Holiday on 100th Birthday
In honor of the 100th birthday of Wesley Pottorff more than 1,000 persons gathered at his home in Hartsville, Bartholomew co. yesterday and joined celebration of the event. Hartsville centenarian too deaf to hear all the complimentary remarks made by speakers.
Columbus, Indiana. July 2, Wesley Pottorff of Hartsville, Bartholomew county, lives to be one hundred years old, he will not have to buy any more candles. He celebrated his one-hundredth birthday at Hartsville yesterday and two birthday cakes were presented him. Each cake was decorated with one hundred candles. One of these was given by E.K. Smiley, who lives east of Hartsville, and the other was given by Mrs. Fannie Vaught of Shelbyville, a relative. Mrs. Lillie Sharp of this city also sent a fancy birthday cake but it was not decorated with candles.
Uncle Wesley seemed to be awed by the crowd that went to Hartsville to see a man who is one hundred years old. Rain had marred the plans of the celebration committee to have the affair in the public square so the program was given in the Christian Church. The church was crowded and many persons stood outside. Mr. Pottorff sat on the platform, while various speakers told of his good qualities, and it seemed a pity that he was too deaf to hear all the complimentary things they were saying about him. He was present at the dinner in his honor and present throughout the program. When the speaking was ended he and his wife stood on the platform and shook hands with many persons.
Among those who spoke were the Rev. Alonzo Murphy of Greensburg; the Rev. Elins Clapp and the Rev. J.R. Larmore, of Hartsville; Marshall Hacker, B.M. Hutchins and the Rev. W.H. Book of this city. William Mobley, of Hartsville made the speech presenting a cane, the gift of Hartsville people to Mr. Pottorff.
