Baltimore ist die größte Stadt im US-Bundesstaat Maryland und die 26. bevölkerungsreichste Stadt des Landes. Es ist die größte unabhängige Stadt in den Vereinigten Staaten.
Baltimore wurde 1729 gegründet und ist der zweitgrößte Seehafen im mittleren Atlantik. Baltimores Inner Harbor war einst der zweitgrößte Einreisehafen für Einwanderer in die USA und ein wichtiges Produktionszentrum. Nach einem Rückgang der großen Produktion, Industrialisierung und des Schienenverkehrs wechselte Baltimore zu einer dienstleistungsorientierten Wirtschaft mit dem Johns Hopkins Hospital (gegründet 1889) und der Johns Hopkins University (gegründet 1876), die heute die beiden größten Arbeitgeber der Stadt sind.
Baltimore hatte 2013 eine Bevölkerung von 622.104; Im Jahr 2010 betrug der Anteil der Metropolregion Baltimore mit 2,7 Millionen die 20. größte des Landes. Mit Hunderten von identifizierten Bezirken wurde Baltimore als "Stadt der Nachbarschaften" bezeichnet. Zu den berühmten Bewohnern gehörten die Schriftsteller Edgar Allan Poe, Frederick Douglass und H. L. Mencken, der Jazzmusiker James "Eubie" Blake, die Sängerin Billie Holiday, der Schauspieler und Filmemacher John Waters sowie die Baseballspielerin Babe Ruth. Im Krieg von 1812 schrieb Francis Scott Key The Star-Spangled Banner, später die amerikanische Nationalhymne, in der Stadt. Fast ein Viertel der Arbeitsplätze in der Region Baltimore entfallen auf Naturwissenschaften, Technik, Ingenieurwesen und Mathematik, was zum Teil auf die umfangreichen Grund- und Graduiertenschulen zurückzuführen ist.
Geschichte:
Die Stadt ist nach Cecil Calvert, dem zweiten Lord Baltimore (1605–1675), einem Mitglied des irischen Oberhauses und Gründungsinhaber der Kolonie und der Provinz Maryland, benannt. Baltimore ist eine Anglisierung des irischen Namens Baile an Tí Mhóir, was "Stadt des großen Hauses" bedeutet. Dies war der Name des Anwesens in der Grafschaft Longford, auf dem die Familie Calvert in Irland lebte.
Im Jahr 1608 reiste Kapitän John Smith 210 Meilen von Jamestown zur obersten Chesapeake Bay und führte die erste europäische Expedition zum Patapsco River. Der Name "Patapsco" leitet sich von pota-psk-ut ab, was übersetzt "Rückstau" oder "Gezeitenbedeckung" bedeutet mit Schaum "im algonquischen Dialekt. Ein Vierteljahrhundert nach John Smiths Reise begannen sich englische Kolonisten in Maryland niederzulassen. Das Gebiet, aus dem die moderne Stadt Baltimore und ihre Metropolregion bestehen, wurde erstmals 1661 von David Jones besiedelt. Er beanspruchte das Gebiet, das heute als Harbour East am Ostufer des Jones Falls-Baches bekannt ist und nach Süden in den Inner Harbor von Baltimore fließt.
In den frühen 1600er Jahren wurde die unmittelbare Umgebung von Baltimore, wenn überhaupt, von amerikanischen Ureinwohnern dünn besiedelt. Das Gebiet des Baltimore County nach Norden wurde von den im unteren Susquehanna River Valley lebenden Susquehannocks als Jagdrevier genutzt, die "alle oberen Nebenflüsse des Chesapeake kontrollierten", aber "keinen Kontakt mit Powhatan in der Potomac-Region hatten". Unter dem Druck der Susquehannocks blieb der Piscataway-Stamm der Algonquianer weit südlich des Baltimore-Gebiets und bewohnte hauptsächlich das Nordufer des Potomac River im heutigen Charles und im südlichen Prince George südlich der Fall Line. Das Gebiet um Baltimore war seit mindestens dem 10. Jahrtausend v. Chr. Von amerikanischen Ureinwohnern bewohnt, als sich die Paläo-Indianer zum ersten Mal in der Region niederließen. In Baltimore wurden eine paläo-indische Stätte sowie mehrere archäologische Stätten aus der Archaik- und Waldzeit identifiziert, darunter vier aus der Spätwaldzeit. Während der Spätwaldzeit lebte die archäologische Kultur, die als "Potomac Creek-Komplex" bezeichnet wird, in der Gegend von Baltimore bis zum Rappahannock River in Virginia.
Die koloniale Generalversammlung von Maryland schuf 1706 den Hafen von Baltimore am alten Whetstone Point (heute Locust Point) für den Tabakhandel. Die Stadt Baltimore wurde kurz darauf am 30. Juli 1729 gegründet und angelegt und ist nach Lord Baltimore (Cecilius Calvert) benannt, dem ersten proprietären Gouverneur der Provinz Maryland. Cecilius Calvert war der älteste Sohn von Sir George Calvert (1579–1632), der 1625 der erste Lord Baltimore der Grafschaft Longford, Irland, wurde. Zuvor war er ein treuer Agent von König Charles I. von England (1600–1649). als sein Außenminister, bis er sich zum Anhänger des römischen Katholizismus erklärte. Unabhängig davon gab der König seinem Erben Cecil noch 1632 das Stipendium für die Kolonie Maryland. Die Kolonie war eine Fortsetzung seiner früheren Siedlung in Neufundland, bekannt als "Acadia" oder "Avalon" (zukünftiges Kanada), die er für zu kalt und schwierig zum Wohnen hielt.
Baltimore wuchs im 18. Jahrhundert schnell als Getreidespeicher für zuckerproduzierende Kolonien in der Karibik.
