The Origin of the Cottageville Cemetery:

Early in 1885 three men who were prominent in the Cottageville Methodist Church (also known at that time as Round 0 Methodist Chapel) set forth on horseback one Sunday afternoon to select a site for a cemetery to serve their families and the new growing Cottageville community. These men were Reverend Doctor George Peirce, Captain Ben Willis (who was also a doctor) and Doctor A. E. Williams. As they selected and agreed upon the present site, Reverend Peirce dismounted and prayed a prayer consecrating this spot for its intended use. The land belonged to Mrs. Anna Adams Willis, mother of Captain Ben Willis. Mrs. Willis agreed with the decision of the men and noted that the colored people needed a burying place too. She instructed that two acres of land across the branch be used for them. The cemetery for African-Americans is known as the Fox Cemetery, which is not to be confused with the existing Fox Cemetery used by white people. More than one hundred years later, descendants of Mrs. Willis gave additional land for the Cottageville Cemetery.
