Sutton resident Edmund R. Griess, 94, died Friday, January 6, 2012, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton, NE.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at Sutton Memorial Chapel with the Free German Reformed Salem Church Elders officiating. Interment will be at the Free German Reformed Salem Church Cemetery near Sutton, NE. Visitation will be Monday from 1 p.m. - 8 p.m., with the family present from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, NE.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Sutton Community Home, Sutton Historical Society or the Clay County Relay For Life. Sutton Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Edmund was born August 19, 1917, to Richard and Olanda Griess near Sutton, and attended District 8 and 14 country schools. As a young man, he worked for many farmers as a hired hand.
On July 30, 1941, he was united in marriage to Gertrude E. Huber in Aurora, NE. They made their home on a farm near Sutton. In 1970, they received the Clay County Soil & Water Conservation District award naming them the honor family. Upon retiring from farming they moved to Sutton in 1977 and Ed worked at the Sale Barn for several years.
He was a member of the Free German Reformed Salem Church. Some of the organizations he was involved with were: Township Board and ASCS (Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service).
He is survived by his daughters, Mary Ann Griess of Hastings, NE; Elizabeth Hofmann of Sutton, NE; daughter-in-law, Linda Griess of Sutton, NE and her fiancee Lee Lautenschlager of Shickley, NE; grandchildren, Jesse Hofmann, Ashley Thompson and husband Jeff, Priscilla Myers and husband Joshua all of Sutton, NE; Joshua Griess and wife Lorainne of Shickley, NE; Erica Griess and fiancee Travis Barker of Omaha, NE; great grandchildren, Tyler and Ryan Myers of Sutton, NE; Devon and Addisyn Griess of Shickley, NE; sisters, Minnie Hofmann and Leona Rath both of Sutton, NE; brother-in-law, Pauly Griess of Grafton, NE; sisters-in-law, Katherina Griess and Anna Griess both of Sutton, NE; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gertrude E. Griess; son, Richard E. "Dick" Griess; son-in-law, Richard L. Hofmann; brothers, Reinhold Griess and wife, Ruth; Oscar Griess; Gilbert Griess and wife Luella; and Simeon Griess; sisters, Talitha Hofmann and husband Albert; Johanna Griess; brothers-in-law Gilbert Hofmann and Robert Rath.
