Jerome H. "Jerry" Rauscher, 89, a resident of the Forest Grove community, died Saturday evening, February 1, 2014 at his home.
Jerome (Jerry) Rauscher was born in Sutton, Nebraska on July 11, 1924 to Henry and Pauline (Alt) Rauscher. He died on February 1, 2014 at his home in Forest Grove after suffering a stroke. He was 89 years old.
Jerry graduated from Sutton High School in 1942 and worked on his uncle's wheat and cattle ranch in Colorado before enlisting in the Army in 1943. After sustaining an injury during his training at Ft. McClellan, Alabama, Jerry received a medical discharge and decided to follow his sister Ruth and her husband to Oregon, where they had started a dairy in the Gaston area. Jerry worked on the dairy and enrolled at Pacific University in Forest Grove on the GI Bill.
While at Pacific university, Jerry met Patricia Ann Hickenbottom. They were married on June 2, 1946 at White Temple Baptist Church in Portland and went on to raise four children in Forest Grove. He and Pat lived in Forest Grove for their entire marriage. They owned a home on 15th Place in Forest Grove for 58 years, moving to Jennings McCall in 2012.
Jerry worked for Miller's Hardware in Forest Grove early in their marriage, then went on to work as a route salesman for Mayflower Dairy, Davidson's Sunbeam Bread, Langendorf Bakery and Franz Bakery, retiring from Franz in 1984.
Jerry was a member of the Forest Grove United Church of Christ for over 65 years, where he sang in the choir. He sang with the Westside Singers (formerly the Forest Grove Gleemen and Girls) from 1946 to 2011. He also organized and worked at the Original All- Northwest Barbershop Quartet Contest from 1946 to 2012.
After retirement, Jerry and Pat traveled around the US, Italy and England, and enjoyed exploring Eastern Oregon and going camping in their fifth wheel. They also lived part of the year in California and Arizona, spending many winters at Indian Skies Resort in Coolidge, Arizona.
Jerry learned to create stained glass art after taking a night class and became a talented glass artist. He was a member of Valley Art Association and sold his work at the Gallery and through special commissions.
Jerry is survived by his wife Pat and children Beth Armstrong (Steve) of Fremont, CA; Nancy Stites (Dale Imbleau) of Portland; Ken Rauscher (Ann Root) of Seattle and Terri Clay (Paul) of La Habra, CA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Chris Armstrong, Lindy Brown, Jacob Imbleau, Brian Foley, Audrey Foley-Thornburgh, Shannon Clay, Kara Clay, and Tim Clay, and six great grandchildren: Cameron Armstrong, Genevieve Brown, Caden Foley, Devyn Foley, Erynn Foley and Grayson Thornburgh. Jerry is also survived by his brother Bob Rauscher (Barbara) of Hillsboro and his sister Ramona Nuss of Lincoln, NE. Siblings Ruth Haberman, Verneta Hohnstein and Thomas Rauscher preceded him in death.
