Larry R. McIntyre passed away quietly and peacefully on Saturday, January 19, 2008, in the arms of his loving wife Kathleen. His family gathered to support each other and to honor his wishes to die as he had lived: with dignity. Fresno was his home, where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1959, and where he joined the U.S. Air Force to log four years as an Air Policeman. When his service to his country was completed, he chose to begin a career in law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department. On April 1, 1968, he signed on with the Fresno Police Department (FPD). He would spend the next 31 years serving his community. When he retired in 1999, Lt. Mclntyre had successfully tackled many law enforcement assignments for the FPD: Narcotics Enforcement, Community Based Policing, and Major Crimes Unit including Homicide and was instrumental in creating the Bomb Squad. During his 27 years of leadership with this special unit, Lt. McIntyre helped to strengthen and expand its personnel and equipment. His choice to retrieve crucial and explosive evidence during the investigation of the bombing of Fresno's IRS brought him a citation from the State Attorney General, and in 2001 he received the Fresno Police Department's Medal of Valor for his outstanding actions and successful investigation of that crime. Lt. McIntyre's personal legacy is no less than his profession. He mentored many young police officers who later became leaders within the department. Larry loved, cared for and nurtured his many friends, all of whom will miss his smile, quick wit, jokes, compassion and cribbage playing. His family remained his focus to the end. His presence will live on within each of them: his wife, Kathleen McIntyre; his brother, Leonard R. Mclntyre; and sister, Carol L. Maerzke. Larry's greatest joys were his two children and five grand-children: his daughter and son-in-law, Traci and Michael Noche and children Michelle, Christian and Jared, as well as his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Peggy McIntyre and children Alysha and Gauge. A Public Viewing will take place at Wildrose Chapel and Funeral Home, 916 East Divisadero, on Friday, January 25, 2008, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Please come together in a Celebration of Larry McIntyre's exceptional and full life at a Memorial Service to be held at The Dante Club, 6176 N. Grantland on Saturday, January 26, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Fresno Memorial Gardens, 175 S. Cornelia Ave., immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Larry McIntyre's memory to: The Fresno Police Officers Association Scholarship Memorial Fund, 994 N. Van Ness, Fresno, Ca. 93721.
Friends, family and fellow officers said goodbye to a well respected member of the Fresno police department Saturday.
Funeral services for retired Fresno Officer Larry McIntyre were held Saturday morning at the Dante Club.
McIntyre died last week of complications from diabetes.
He was instrumental in forming the department's bomb squad and headed the homicide unit for several years. Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer worked under Larry McIntyre for a time. At the funeral, Dyer said McIntyre cared deeply for the people he worked with on both professional and personal levels.
"That was a common theme that everybody knew about Larry and that is the very reason, I believe, why so many people in our organization wanted to work directly for Larry McIntyre because he knew how to treat his people," says Chief Dyer.
The funeral was followed by the burial at Fresno Memorial Gardens.
