James F. Urbach, 84, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Church of All Nations in Sioux City. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.
James was born Jan. 15, 1921, in Harvard, Neb., the son of Conrad and Elizabeth (Yost) Urbach. He graduated from Clay Center High School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed with the Persian Gulf Command in Teheran, Iran, from 1942 to 1945. Shortly after arriving in Iran, he suffered back injuries when the train he was being transported on hit another train head on.
He married Mary Schwab on June 7, 1946, in Sutton, Neb. They made their home in York, Neb., where he owned and operated a poultry hatchery until moving to Worthington, Minn., in 1959, where he was a district manager for the DeKalb Agriculture Association. In 1964, they moved to Fergus Falls, Minn., where he was a real estate agent and, during 1976, the family moved to Dakota City, where he was employed as a security guard. In 1988, they moved to Sioux City where he worked at Goodwill Industries until retiring in the mid-1990s.
He believed in giving back to the communities he lived in and was an example for others in community service. In York, he worked with the youth in 4-H and also was a Rotarian. While in Fergus Falls, he joined the Kiwanis Club. When he moved to Sioux City, he joined the Evening Lions Club.
The Methodist church was also a very important part of his life. He was an active member and served on many church committees.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, JoAnne and her husband, Dr. Neville Moody and Susan Urbach; and a brother, the Rev. Richard Urbach and his wife, Lois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister. (bio by: Monica Schafer)
