JACOB M. SERR
Jacob M. Serr came to America as a boy of eight with his father, Michael Serr, and his mother, born Katharina Engel. The father was a native of Worms, and the mother of Danzig. Jacob was born in the village of Nadenfeld on December 25, 1864.
On their arrival in America in 1873, they settled in the vicinity of Scotland, Dakota Territory. They were more fortunate than many immigrants, bringing with them about $4,000.00 in cash. As a consequence they acquired land in addition to the homestead and timber claim they took up near Scotland. They prospered in the new country, but felt cramped when they were unable to provide necessary range for the considerable herd of cattle which developed. The elder Serr then sold his holdings and retired to a home in Scotland while Jacob came to Eureka, bringing with him three carloads of horses and cattle, which he disposed of to advantage to farmers in the Eureka section. He arrived in Eureka on April
3, 1889.
Shortly after his arrival in Eureka, on July 14, 1889, to be exact, he was married to Christina Liedle, whom he had known while residing near Scotland. They removed to a home of their own and started to do their share in the building of the new town. Except for two years or so, when the Serrs went to the Yankton section, where they farmed, they have resided in Eureka and Mr. Serr has been a part of its business life.
For 26 years he operated a dray line and was local agent for the Hamm Brewing Company of St. Paul. He was also associated with the Standard Oil Company, hauling their products in wagon tanks to points as far distant as Bangor, one-time county seat of Walworth County.
He has now retired from active business and he and his wife are situated in a comfortable home in the south part of Eureka.
Mr. and Mrs. Jacob M. Serr
The Serrs have seven children, all of whom survive and reside in widely separated parts of the country. Otto is a druggist in Winnipeg, Manitoba; Edwin, a rural mail carrier in Eureka; Mrs. Alma Bender also resides in her native town. Mrs. Ella Oberlander resides in Ipswich; Calvin is a telephone lineman at Britton, South Dakota; William, a creamery employee at Yakima, Washington; and Esther a bookkeeper in Eureka.
