In addition to being a homemaker and raising their two children, she helped her husband on the farm. Hilda enjoyed crocheting. She and her husband also enjoyed traveling and would travel with another couple. They preferred going during the school year, when the crowds were not as great. There were five or six couples that they frequently got together with, fishing and playing cards. She was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton, and was selected as the Sutton Community Home's Resident of the Month for May, 2004. Hilda is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Verlene and Jim Hancock of Lincoln, NE; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Schmidt of Lincoln, NE; sister, Esther Griess of Sutton, NE; grandchildren: Ron Carlson, Tony and Nancy Carlson, Scott and Janet Carlson, Connie and Tony Peterson, Patty and Bill Doney, Audrey and Harold Stewart, Cathy and Jerry Barger and David and Kelly Schmidt; 14 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Herman J. Schmidt; son, Lawrence Schmidt; son-in-law, Orlo "Pete" Carlson; granddaughter, Pamela Schmidt; 3 sisters and 1 brother.
