Anchorage Daily News April 17, 2002
MARY HORNING, 55, an Anchorage resident for more than 50 years, died of cancer April 12, 2002, at home. A memorial service was held at Scenic Park Bible Church. A potluck followed.
Mrs. Horning was born April 18, 1946, in Pasadena, Calif., and moved with her family to Anchorage in fall 1948. She graduated from West Anchorage High School in 1964, and Alaska Methodist University in 1968 where she earned a degree in elementary education. In the mid 1970s, she taught kindergarten and first grade at Eagle River Christian Academy, a ministry of Church in the Wildwood in Eagle River. Her family wrote: ''She was a devoted wife and mother who home-schooled her two sons through their junior and senior years of high school. ''For over 30 years Mary had a business in her home selling Shaklee products and as a result was well known by many people throughout the community. ''She had a great love for children and was involved in children's ministries at Chapel by the Sea, Church in the Wildwood and Faith Bible Fellowship. Before she was incapacitated by her illness, she served as the children's church director at Scenic Park Bible Church in Anchorage. ''As a pastor's wife for 32 years, Mary was actively involved in many aspects of church life. Because of her caring heart and listening ear, many people sought her out for counsel. Her strong faith and commitment to Jesus Christ served as a great source of comfort and strength to her family and friends.''
Mrs. Horning is survived by her husband, Denis, pastor of Scenic Park Bible Church, and by her sons, David and Jonathan; and daughters-in-law, Laura and Sarah; and four grandchildren, Samuel, Ryan, Katie and Kayla.
