  Leanne Moringlanes - www.huntoonfamily.net: I0166 Maria was born November 10, 1834 in Olmstead, Cuyahoga, Ohio. She moved to Evanston, Illinois with her parents. She met Gardner Stearns (born Mar 6, 1827 in Olmstead, Cuyahoga, Ohio). She returned to Ohio where she married Gardner on June 6, 1852.During the Civil War the family moved back to Evanston where they lived with relatives. Maria would entertain the children, and taught them songs. Maria played the according and their little dog would "dance" to the music. Maria remembers when she was a child, when President Lincoln was assassinated the women and children made black rosettes and arm bands for the mourners to wear when his train came through Evanston.Gardner, suffered the loss of his right arm during the Civil War. In order to compensate for the loss of his arm while driving a carriage, he would put the reins of the horse around his neck and hold the reins with his left hand. One day when Gardner and Maria were out in the carriage something frightened the horse. The horse reared which resulted in the carriage being overturned. Maria was carrying twins at the time and the accident ultimately resulted in the death of one of the twins, Lorene. Irene survived, but Maria subsequently died on October 10, 1870.Some time later, Gardner remarried a women named Catherine Edwards. Gardner died October 6, 1898 in North Olmstead, Cuyahoga, Ohio.(Much of this information came from Nancy Thompson Schoerke, the granddaughter of Maria and Gardner Stearns 3/2003)
