Literal translation by Mark Ziemann of “Short Life Story of Paster Michael Hofer” found in his bound published sermons, Pretigan. These were published after his death by his congregation at the Hofer Church, outside of Sutton, Clay Co., Nebraska, CA
Pastor Michael Hofer, born on 12th September, 1840, South Russia, Neudorf. Died at 88 years, 4 months and 18 days on the 30th January, 1929. His first study time began him at the teacher-helper under a parish teacher. But his sermon (preaching) study he did entirely in Berlin, Germany. After finishing his studies, he would, that is, with a a study-college colleague named Wiegand, then the missionary, to India went, were he 19 years unto the heathen God's word taught.
After the death of his wife, traveled he, by the wish of his father, again back to Russia and found heart-felt reception, by members of the Reformed (Calvinist) Church friends and well-knowns. Pastor Hofer would be from friends and well-knowns, asked God's word to preach, which he did. But, in the empire of Russia, the missionary drive gefeßlich, his time forbidden was, came Pastor Hofer, through jealousy, hatred and renunciation for the benefit of brothers and men in flight, by the Russian authorities. Happy but accepting him his and through help good friends, closed him Pastor Hofer, Russia to leave and to the United States to travel.
In February 1885, in South Dakota he arrived. Found he already a job in the Reformed Church, but from the short duration. Then it raised him himself, again complaint towards him, from the Benefit Brothers and educated men, because his religion teacher, on what they him from the Reformed Church suspended. The church council and parish stood close to him. Determined him a free German Reformed Congregation in South Dakota to organize in which parish. He than preaching.
