Norman D. Laughlin, age 78, of Missoula, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at his home in Missoula of natural causes.
He was born Dec. 1, 1929, in Raymond, Ill., a son of Arthur and Anna Laughlin.
Norm was a veteran of World War II and Korea, receiving his honorable discharge.
He married Clara Zimbelman in 1963 and she preceded him in death Oct. 18, 1997.
The majority of Norm's adult life was spent driving truck for many different companies doing long-haul trucking. Norm was interested in all civic organizations in Missoula. He served in law enforcement as a bailiff.
Among his many attributes was the flying Santa over Missoula for over 30 years.
He was active in all the veterans' organizations in Missoula, and started the Honor Guard for veterans' funerals. He helped every year with the parade of flags at Missoula City Cemetery, and all the veteran honor guards at the Missoula Community Cemeteries for Memorial Day. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, DAV and the Elks lodge.
A true Irishman, Norm loved going to Butte for St. Patrick's Day.
He was an active member of Atonement Lutheran church and local youth groups. He enjoyed doing the annual pancake breakfast at the church. He bowled in several Senior Leagues in Missoula and was an accomplished bowler.
Norman was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers Howard, Arthur and Chester Laughlin. He is now survived by one son, Art (Heidi) of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Diana (Larry) Youngquist of Sidney and Polly (Ron) Jones of Great Falls; grandchildren Suzzie (Boe), Chris, Mike (Kelly); David (Naden), JC (Kim), Shannon (Dustin), Bryce, and Cyra; and great-grandchildren Tucker, Jazmyn, Garrett, Dean, Steven, Andrew, Jamie Lee, Mike and Christian.
