William Sr. came to California in 1846. With his father-in-law, John Whisman, he built an up-to-date water-power grist mill on Campbell Creek in what is now Saratoga. In the very early pioneer days he served as deputy sheriff of SantaClara County.
In 1848, William Haun, with William Campbell and his son, Benjamin Campbell, established a saw mill at Long Bridge. That is why Quito Creek used to be called Campbell Creek.
Believed to be Peter Haun's son, but this has not been documented. In 1860, William was farming in Redwood Township, Santa Clara, California. His wife, Levina, and seven children were living with him.
In 1922, a newspaper article gives some Haun history in Santa Clara County: Å“The oldest jail in California, erected here in the days before the gold rush of Ëœ49, is being razed in order to make way for a modern buildidng. The ancient calaboose, which was built of adobe brick by the Indians, is approximately 100 years old. The building boasted of two rooms, a jail room, containing rings in the floors an walls, to which prisoners were chained, and a kitchen. The jail lhad no windows. The jail was used by the Mexicans until 1846, until William Haun, father of Judge George J. Haun and John Haun of Saratoga, arrived, and was a pointed alcalde. Haun was in charge of the jail for several years. Later the old building was abandoned as a jail and converted into a storeroom for the alcaldeâ„¢s use. The jail is located on the Gardner property, Harrison and Jackson sts.Â
