Graduate of Queenâ„¢s College, Oxford. Anglican clergyman; rector of Jamestown Parish; President of the College of William and Mary (1743-1752) and Commissary of the Bishop of London and a Member of the Council of State.master of moral philosophy at William and Mary; poet; chaplain of the House of Burgesses; member of the Governor's Council. He lent his name to one of the dorms on campus, Dawson Hall.
Rev. William Dawson did not long survive his second marriage, dying ten days later on 20 July 1752. Francis Jerdone, a Yorktown merchant, felt that the minister was fortunate to escape his new wife so soon. In a letter to a British friend, James Foulis, he reported, Å“'Your good friend, Mr. Commissary Dawson, died about the 20th July [1752]. About ten days before that he married the widow Bassett. It is generally said that it was happy for him that he did not live to experience the unhappiness it would have created for him.'"
