John married his cousin. He attended William and Mary with Thomas Jefferson and they formed a lasting friendship which spanned five decades.Jefferson stayed at Rosewell so often that he had his own room set aside there, and there was an old tradition that Jefferson had written a rough draft of the Declaration of Independence in that room. He entered the House of Burgesses as a young man. During the Revolutionary War he headed the Committees of Safety along with Dudley Digges.John Page lost the governorship to Thomas Jefferson by one vote in 1799.
