Paul Scherer:
Note:
In Russia, he was a carpenter, cabinet maker and wheelwright. He migrated to the U.S. on June 10, 1903. He left Russia to avoid the draft. According to his daughter, Lydia, they left Odessa, Russia by train and went to Bremen, Germany where the ship departed on May 12, 1903. He settled in North Dakota because of the free land. He became a U.S. citizen some time later. The children became citizens when their parents did. They homesteaded near Carson, North dakota and farmed until he retired and then lived in Elgin, North Dakota. After his wife's death, he lived with his son August until his death. He died May 11, 1950 at Elgin, North Dakota. He married Lydia Lutz in 1895. She was born February 22, 1875 at Odessa, Russia. She died September 4, 1940 at Elgin, North Dakota. They are both buried at the Congregational Cemetery, Carson, ND. They lived in Waterloo Russia until they migrated to the USA. Lydia's mother, Julia Benke Lutz came to the U.S. after 1903 and applied for 80 acres of land and stayed 1 1/2 years. John Scheerer worked the land and built her a house on it. When she went back to Russia, she gave John Scheerer the deed to the land.
