After her husband Johnâ„¢s death, Lucy and young James, who had crossed the Isthmus of Panama with the 4th Infantry, boarded the SS Golden Gate and sailed up to San Francisco. They then traveled back to Covington, KY, stopping to visit Julia Grant along the way.
After her second husband Bruce Porterâ„¢s death, President Grant appointed Lucy Postmistress of Louisville, Kentucky. Å“On the recommendation of Jesse R. Grant, father of the President, Mrs. Lucy Morehead Porter of Newport has been made postmistress at Louisville.ÂÅ“Two of the most important post offices in Kentucky are held by women.Â
Doris Newton Goreâ„¢s D.A.R. application cites newspaper clippings, letters from her to her father, Army records, Governors of Kentucky page 38, Clift. www.rootsweb.com cites date of death as 7 Aug 1900 and her age as being 76 years 4 months and 25 days. However, the newspaper announcement says 5 Aug 1900.
