In 1830, John and Hannah had 1 young son and 3 young daughters in Jackson County, Missouri.In 1840, John and his large family were enumerated in Jackson County, Missouri: 1 male undeer 5; 1 male 10 - <15, 1 male 40 - <50 (John); 2 females under 5; 1 female 5 - <10; 2 females 10 - <15, 1 female 20 - <30, 1 female 40 - <50 (his wife, Hannah).On the same page was the family of James Moody.
John Whisman's two eldest daughters were married in Missouri. Records show that William Haun, Levina's husband, was in California in 1846. Levina then followed with her family the following year. All members of the family arrived safely in California, although the eldest, Alpha, died about March 1848 in California. The Whisman family settled near Mountain View in Santa Clara County, California about 9 miles from Santa Clara. They lived there until John died in 1870. His home was located where the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot now stands. In the fall of 1849, John Whisman began a mule and
mustang drawn San Jose - San Francisco omnibus line, the first stage line in California. He was trustee of the old Santa Clara Female Seminary that was founded in the 1850's. Mrs. Edward Whisman, who has Old John's Bible, told Charles Whisman the family tradition was: He was born in Virginia, Married in Indiana, had children in Missouri and left for California about September 1848. He married in 1821 so must have moved to Missouri sometime between 1821 and 1828. Charles Whisman believes that he found Old John's birth record. The church that the Wisman's attended in Wythe County, Virginia was Mt. Zion Lutheran Church on Cripple Creek. Their records of baptism show John born February 10, 1796 and baptized on July 24, 1796. His parents were Philip & Elizabeth Wisman. This birth differs by 20 days from that given (January 20) in Old John's Bible. It seems to me it must be the same person. It would be a great coincidence if two brothers had sons named John so short a time apart.
