Shore started for California with his father on the overland trail in 1850. When theyreached Salt Lake City, their store of provisions was exhausted, and inorder to procure a supply sufficient to last through the journey, they were obliged to work for the Mormons. When the party again started onthe journey, it was decided to enter California by the southern trail.Against this action they were warned by the Mormons, who told them ofthe hardships they would have to endure. The result proved the Mormons had advised them in good faith, for the trip was attended by much dangerand difficulty. They were met by deep morasses and swamps rendered almost impassable by heavy rains, rugged mountain trails, swollen streams and dreary deserts, which made them many times wish they had gone by the Northern route. All these difficulties were finally overcome, however, and the party arrived in the land of gold. The Shores first went to that section of the State now known as NevadaCounty, where, after a brief and unsatisfactory experience in mining, they came to Santa Clara County, arriving in the autumn of 1850 and settling in Braly school district, about five miles northwest of Santa Clara.
