Jeremiah Michael Shay (Shea) was born in County Kerry, Ireland to Patrick Shea and Eleanor Driscoll. He claimed his birth date was 3 Jul 1857 but he had a brother, James Patrick, that claimed his (James') birth date was in April 1857. He also had a brother Patrick Henry and 3 sisters: Mary J, Catherine, and Eleanor. The family arrived in the U.S. in 1871 or 1872 and settled in the Town of Veteran, Chemung County, New York.
Jerry married Jane Ann Grady in 1879 and they had 15 children, including 2 boys that died young from summer's complaint and a still born boy. They moved around following one railroad job after another from the village of Millport to Corning to Blackwell in Tioga County, Pennsylvania to Wellsboro, Lockhaven (Clinton Co PA), and finally Towanda, Bradford County, PA. He loved to hunt and fish when he wasn't working long hours maintaining the railroad.
Jerry died a couple weeks after having an operation of acute gangrenous appendicitis, perforated.
