Went to Alaska in 1900, where he met George Cress. They stayed one winter; had a claim staked out & were doing well - Nicene Mining Co. (hydraulic mining company). They drove teams of horses but were lonely & gave it up to come home. Fred was quite a character. His wife, Lillian, was a tyrant & didn't like children, so Norma & Millie were not close to Fred. When Lil died, Fred buried her ashes in a coffee can but wouldn't spend $ on a marker, so when Fred died, George wouldn't put a marker on Fred's grave either. He, too, is buried in a coffee can under the same tree as Lillian. In the 1930 census Fred and Lillian were living on Central Avenue, and Fred's occupation is listed as "contractor, road building."
