Lois Ruth Cook Ackerman, 87, died Feb. 21, 2012, of natural causes at Ecumen Lakeshore.
Her earthly father delivered her, and her heavenly Father delivered her on the same date, February 21, to her eternal home.
Funeral services will be held on Fri., Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. at The Vineyard Church in Duluth, MN. A memorial service will be held later in July 2012 in Aberdeen, SD, at Faith United Methodist Church where she spent her last years in retirement. Burial will be next to her husband, Peter Ackerman, in the Greenway Cemetery in South Dakota.
Lois was born Feb. 21, 1925, to Joseph and Margaret (Jochens) Cook at their Mira Valley farm home during a blizzard near Ord, NE. She attended Districts 9 and 10 rural schools, completing eighth grade at District 9 and 10th grade at District 10 in Mira Valley. She graduated from Ord High School in 1943 and taught the elementary grades for seven years in both Districts 9 and 10 where she had been a pupil. In 1953, she graduated from York College. She taught the fifth/sixth grade in Ord one year.
On Aug. 12, 1954, she was united in marriage to Peter Glen Ackerman at her home Evangelical United Brethren Church in Mira Valley near Ord, Neb. She taught first grade in Lisle and Lumbard, IL, for two years while Peter attended Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville and McCormick Seminary in Chicago, IL. In 1956 she began her ministry with Peter at Lehr, ND, where their first daughter, Laura Faye, was born. In 1958 their son, Peter Joseph, was born. Both were born in the Wishek hospital. In 1960 the family moved to Great Bend, ND. While serving there identical twin girls were born, Cherol Kaye and Carol Mae were born in Breckenridge, MN, Nov. 16, 1960. The couple served several churches throughout North Dakota and retired to Aberdeen, SD, where they purchased their first home. There, they enjoyed fixing up both house and yard. Her husband died in 1998.
Since the fall of 2009, she has resided at Ecumen Lakeshore in Duluth, MN, to be closer to son, Pete and family.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Sandi Ackerman; three daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Alan, Cherol and Tony and Carol and Paul; and nine grandchildren, Heather, Brooke, Jessica, Anna, Peter (the fifth), Kjell, Keil, Michael, and Aubrie.
