Zimbelman, Melvin E., d. 12-23-2003 “Funeral services for Melvin E. Zimbelman were held Monday, Dec 29, at Heritage Church in Odessa. Mr. Zimbelman, who was 82 years old, died Tuesday, Dec 23, 2003, in Odessa. He was born Dec 16, 1921, in Marlin, the son of Gus and Emma (Kallenberger) Zimbelman. He attended the Dry Lake School and was graduated from Marlin High School in 1939. Melvin entered the US Army on Oct 7, 1942, and was sent to England on Sept 20, 1943. He was a truck driver and a Marksman Carbine Sharpshooter. He received an American Theater Service, European African Middle Eastern Service, Good Conduct and Victory medals. He was discharged from the Army on Jan 17, 1946. Melvin farmed with his father until his father retired and he took over the farm. He retired from farming in 1981. He was a charter member and lifetime member of VFW Post #7395, a member of Cannawai Grange #837, a lifetime member of the Odessa Riders Club and a 57-year member of Wilson Creek American Legion Post #216. Melvin is survived by four sisters, Florence Schlimmer, of Odessa, Ione and Don Zeiler, of Odessa, Viola and Bob Syring, of Spokane, and Rhea Strate, of Spokane; three brothers, Don Zimbelman of Othello, Herb Zimbelman and Bob Zimbelman, both of Odessa; sister-in-law Shirley Zimbelman, of Almira; 13 nieces and 5 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Emma, one brother, Leo ‘Snooks’ Zimbelman, and 2 nephews, Curt Zimbelman and Clarke Schlimmer. Pastor Larry Snyder officiated at the funeral. Full military burial followed at Odessa Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
