Philipp Jr. entered World War I and served in Germany and France. He was wounded in the battles there and when he returned he made his home in Marlin for a time. After a while, due to war injuries, he spent time in Veterans Hospitals in Walla Walla, Washington and Boise, Idaho. He returned to live in Odessa for a few years. After his health failed and he was unable to live alone, he moved to the State Soldiers Home in Orting, Washington. He remained there until his death. He is buried in the Veterans Cemetery in Orting, Washington.
