Gus entered the Army August 28, 1918. He was assigned to Company D, 1st Infrantry and was stationed at Camp Lewis in Tacoma short of 1 year.
Gus & Emma celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 18, 1969 with all 9 children in attendance.
Gus only had a 3rd grade education but was always interested in the books brought home by the children. He kept excellent farm records and was a self-educated man. He was an avid sportsman, trying to attend all the sports activities the children were involved in. He coached a Junior America Legion Softball team and was umpire for many years for the local baseball teams in the ear.
In earlier years he maintained the rural telephone lines and repaired the old wall telephones. He was Lincoln County Registrar and was active in Politics. Gus served on teh Rural Electrification Administration Board in Davenport for many years. Gus & Emma were members of the Odessa Baptist Church. They had 2 sons, Melvin & Herby.

Birth: 1-15-1895, Russia; Spouse: Emma Zimbelman; Father: Phillip Zimbelman; Mother: Magdaline Schatz; Buried: Odessa Cemetery, Odessa, WA.” (Lincoln Co Health death and burial cards) “Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Oct 21, at 2 p.m. for Gustav Zimbelman, retired wheat farmer from the Marlin area. Mr .Zimbelman passed away at Odessa memorial Hospital Oct 17, at the age of 74 years. He was born in South Russia on Jan 15, 1895, son of Phillip and Magdalina Zimbelman and came to this country in 1901. The family moved to Odessa in 1892. In 1919 he was united in marriage to Emma Kallenberger, and they farmed northwest of Odessa until 1963, when Mr. Zimbelman retired. Mr. Zimbelman was a member of the Baptist church, the American Legion, had served as director of Lincoln Electric Cooperative in Davenport for 12 years, and was a 25 year member of the Cannawai Grange. He is survived by his wife, Emma; four daughters, Florence Schlimmer of Marlin, Viola Syring and Rhea Strate, both of Spokane; and Ione Zeiler of Odessa; five sons, Melvin and Herbert of Marlin, Leo of Almira; Donald of Moses Lake, and Robert of Odessa. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Lydia Price, lives in Los Angeles, CA. Funeral services were at the Baptist Church, with Rev Albert Richardson officiating. Strate Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
