Boone County Democrat, August 17, 1906 Boone Iowa
Mrs. Edward Wirtz, another of the best known and most highly esteemed residents of the county, died at her home, 1315 Story street, at 4:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, August 10, after a lingering illness with a complicated disease. She was taken ill in February, 1905, and had since been a constant though patient sufferer. In March of this year she underwent an operation at the hospital here, but to no avail and she gradually declined until death finally relieved her of her suffering last Friday. Kate Merkel, daughter of Conrad and Margaret Merkel, was born in Wayne county, Ohio, December 3, 1848, and was in her fifty eighth year at the time of her death. In 1856 she came with her parents to Boone County. The family resided for a year in Boonsboro and then moved to the farm north of Boone, where they have since been among the most prominent families of the locality. On November 24, 1872, she was united in marriage to Edward Wirtz. For a number of years they made their home in Boonsboro and in 1883 removed to the farm six miles northeast of Boone, where they continued to reside until last winter when on account of her failing health they came to Boone and purchased the home at 1315 Story street where she died. To them were born ten children, two of whom have preceded her to the better world, the survivors are Mrs. Maggie R. Deihl of Boone, John C. of Covinton, Oklahoma, Albert J. on the home farm, Mrs. Mary R. Stotts of Waterloo, Mrs. Catherine M. Sparks, residing east of Boone and Elizabeth L. and Elmer C. at home, who with the husband have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in the loss of a loving and devoted wife and mother. She also leaves two brothers, John Merkel of Boone and J.B. Merkel of York County, Neb., and three sisters Mrs. Mary R. Park, of Findley, Ohio, Mrs. Lizzie Goetzman and Mrs. Luella Goetzman, residing on farms north of Boone. All the relatives were present at the funeral except one daughter, Mrs. Stotts of waterloo, who was prevented from coming on account of illness. In her early youth the deceased became a member of the German Lutheran church and had always lived an earnest Christian life, devoted to her home and family. She was a loyal friend and a kind and generous neighbor, highly esteemed by all who knew her during her long and active life and in the circles where she was known her kindly presence will be greatly missed. The funeral services were held from the Presbyterian Church at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. O.H.L. Mason. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, bespeaking the heartfelt esteem of her many friends. The remains were followed to their last resting place in East Linwood cemetery by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and neighbors.
