Florence Elizabeth (Jones) Zimbelman, 93, of Custer, SD left this world, peacefully, at her home on June 24, 2007.
Florence was born February 8, 1914 to William and Katie May Jones at Gregory, SD. She was the fourth of twelve children and weighed in at just over two pounds. This tiny baby thrived and then survived diphtheria at age seven. She attended the Gregory schools.
Florence married Frank Zimbelman of Dixon, SD in 1932. They moved to the ranch northwest of Custer, where she lived until her death. Between ranching and nurturing her family, Florence's talents included managing and cooking for their annual deer hunting camp. As a seamstress, Florence's talents ranged from wedding gowns to deer skin jackets. Carpentry skills included building cupboards, furniture, and upholstering. Later on she took up oil painting. Her many portraits and scenic Black Hills paintings won numerous awards and reside in homes across the United States.
Florence remained ever awed by these Black Hills Mountains. After four trips to Europe and to India and much touring of the USA, she pronounced home as the most beautiful area of all.
She was the smiling, wise, matriarch of an ever increasing, adoring family. It was she whom we asked forgotten names or dates. Today we all feel orphaned.
Survivors include daughter, B. Kay (John) Baumann of Custer, SD, and their sons, Patrick (Ginger) of Douglas, WY; Mark (Agnes) of Custer; daughter, Tricia, of New Castle, WY; daughter-in-law, LaVella (Mrs. Conrad) Zimbelman, her son and daughter, Larry and Karen of Madison, MN; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Siblings include Mary (Sid) Hasselquist of Columbus, NE; Phyllis (Lyle) Grey, Robert Lindy (Jeanette) Jones, Joann (Wesley) Hansen, Joyce (Lavern) Busskohl all of Custer SD; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; her husband, Frank; son, Conrad; as well as six siblings.
Funeral services Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at Custer Community Church in Custer, SD with Pastor Martin Nussbaum officiating. Committal service will follow at Custer Cemetery.
Arraignments have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer, SD. Written condolences can be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com.
