Helen Ulmer, 89, New Salem, died January 09, 1999, in the New Salem nursing home. Services at 1:30 p.m. MST Wednesday, from United Methodist Church, Hebron, with the Reverend Edward parker officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
Helen was born March 13, 1909, in New Salem, the daughter of Harley and Emma (Zarndt) Norton. Helen was raised and educated at New Salem. She and her sister operated the "Cozy Café" in Mandan. She married Ray Bateman in 1928 in Mandan. She married Chesty Dilger at Mandan in 1936. He died in 1962. In 1966 she married Emanuel Ulmer. Following their marriage, the couple farmed southwest of Glen Ullin until 1971, when they moved to New Salem. Helen has resided at Elmcrest Manor for the last two years.
Helen enjoyed flowers and baking. Her lemon and rhubarb pies were among the very best. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hebron.
Survived by her husband, Emanuel; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Jeannette Bateman, New Salem; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Eugene Gratz, Minneapolis, and Sharon and Darrell Kirkby, Fargo; stepchildren, Dorothy and Robert Miller, Mandan, Jim and Joyce Ulmer, Bismarck, and Rosemary Ulmer, Yakima, Washington; stepson, Albert Luithle, Mott; two sisters, Evelyn Rigney, New Salem, and Nina Hassebrock, New Salem; two brothers, Bert and Louise Norton, New Salem and Dallas and Ruby Norton, New Salem; one sister-in-law, Esther Becker, and two brothers-in-law, Robert and Wilbur Ulmer.
Preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three sisters, two stepchildren, and one great grandchild.
