Alma Berger, 89, Mandan, died March 27, 2015, at Sanford Continuing Care Center off Sunset, Mandan. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with Monsignor Chad Gion as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a rosary/parish vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Alma was born Jan. 1, 1926, the daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Nagel) Wetzel in Glen Ullin, on the family farm. She attended a farm school through the eighth grade.
Alma met her husband, Jack, while she was working at the Patterson Hotel in Bismarck. Alma and Jack were married in Wibaux, Mont., by the justice of the peace and later at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mandan on Sept. 13, 1954. She ran the Buckhorn Bar along with Jack for many years. Many days her patrons would be waiting at the door for her to open the establishment. They always looked forward to the great visits they had with her.
Alma was a great German cook and the families favorite meal was fresh walleye, kasenips and fried potatoes.
Alma will be deeply missed by her son, Jim and daughters-in-law, Jean and Elaine Berger, all of Mandan; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Minnie Wegerle, Wichita, Kan.; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, in 1989; two sons, Rodney and Dennis; here brothers, Edmund (Ruth), Jack (Eleanor), Bennie (Bernice) and Herman (Alice) Wetzel; and her sisters, Lentina (Edgar) Mulhauser, Christine (Bill) Meidinger, Mildren (Ray) Anhorn, Elsie Jack) Doll and Eleanor (Matt) Schaff.
A special thanks to Mom’s great friend, Judy Bondy, Mandan.
