Gustav Frederick Kilburn was born in Summit Township, Monroe County, on June 13, 1873, the son of John Henry and Marie Linge Kilburn, and departed this life at his home in Lewisville of April 16, 1955 at the age of 81 years, ten months and three days.
Through Baptism he became a member of St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church, and at the age of thirteen he was received through the vows of Confirmation.
On March 3, 1896 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Kahrig by the Rev. J. R. Muller. To this union were born five children. One child, Lydia, preceded him in death in 1919.
Those who survive him are Mrs. Freeman Christman and Freeman Kilburn, of Lewisville, Route 1; William Kilburn, of Cambridge, and Mrs. Sylvia Shull of Atwater, Ohio. Also surviving are one brother, Henry Kilburn, of Lewisville, Route 1, and one sister, Mrs. Lucetta Kochart, of Woodsfield. There are also fourteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
This past March Mr. Kilburn and his wife were privileged to celebrate their fifty-ninth wedding anniversary.
His entire life was lived in this church community where he farmed with his family. It is worth noting the outstanding service he gave his community thru his church where over a period of forty years he was the custodian of this church. Because some records have been lost it is impossible to tell just exactly how many years he did serve. But those who remember his faithful devotion to his job will remember with thanksgiving the joy he found in keeping the House of the Lord spotless and clean for those who worshipped here.
Short services were held in the Bauer and Turner Funeral Chapel, Woodsfield on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, with additional services at 2:00 o’clock in St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church at Middle Church. Rev. George W. Varnes officiated. Interment in the church cemetery.
