John R. Schneider, 79, DuBois, passed away Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, at home.
Born Sept. 6, 1935, in Syracuse, N.Y., he was the son of the late William F. and Bernice Rehling Schneider.
He married Linda Coder on Sept. 22, 1962, in Brockport. She survives.
John graduated from DuBois High School in 1954 and from Penn State University in industrial engineering in 1958. He was a licensed professional engineer in Pennsylvania and was a retired engineering instructor at the Penn State DuBois campus. While at Penn State, he received the DuBois Campus' "Educator of the Year" award and the Penn State Engineering Society's "Outstanding Teaching Award". He set up an endowment with PSU for Industrial Engineering students to receive scholarships.
Before joining Penn State as a professor, he was a process engineer for Speer Carbon Company, an industrial engineer for Brockway Glass Company, a consultant and later an associate in the Management Services Department of Arthur Young & Company, a senior industrial engineer for the Plastics Division of Allied Chemical Corporation, a supervisor of administration for Allied's corporate engineering department, a salesman of the Dale Carnegie Course for Wes Westrom & Associates, and a powder metal products sales representative for Symmco Inc.
Additionally, John was the president of the New York-Penn Chapter of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, as well as the finance chairman of the institute's Work Measurement and Methods Engineering Division. In 1972, he was elected director of the division.
He was a member and elder of the First United Presbyterian Church of DuBois and a Presbyterian lay minister. He taught senior high Sunday school and was a senior high youth group leader for many years. He was a member and past master of the Garfield Masonic Lodge #559 in DuBois, past president of the DAHS Alumni Association, a member of the PSU Alumni Society, and a member of the American Society of Engineering Education.
His hobbies included golfing and playing in bocci ball tournaments at Gasbarre Landing.
John served in the Army at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, in the guidance and control development of the Pershing missile, in reliability analyses of computer simulated flights of the Redstone and Jupiter missiles, and in preliminary reliability analysis of Project Mercury, the nation's first man-in-space program.
He is also survived by two daughters, Ellen B. (Jim) Wayland of DuBois and Noreen E. (Bill) Fritz of Reisterstown, Md.; a son, John C. Schneider of DuBois; and seven grandsons: Jordan Wayland, Jonathon Wayland, Joshua Wayland, Bill Fritz, Drew Fritz, Noah Schneider, and Eric Schneider. He is also survived by a sister, Marla J. McMahan of Columbus, Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Glenna B. Schneider of Anniston, Ala.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, William R. Schneider of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Friends and family will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Adamson Funeral Chapel Inc. in DuBois. A Masonic Service will be conducted by the Garfield Lodge #559 at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at the funeral chapel with the Rev. Richard Whitaker officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard. Interment will be in Morningside Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Hahne Cancer Center, 100 Hospital Ave., DuBois or to a charity of the donor's choice.
