Sorry to disapoint you, but "Wiest" (or Wüst, in German) doesn't mean "crazy" or "mean." In keeping with 15th century German naming practices, in Old German,"Wüst" as a cognomen means "desert," or more precisely "wilderness" in the Biblical sense. The first German Wüsts identifi able come from the Village of Dierbach in the Duchy of Zweibrucken, Rhein-Pfalz. The area surrounding Dierbach satisfies the deffinition of "wilderness" in two senses: (1) it was a wooded, mountainous region in the 15th century; and (2) it was an area devistated by a couple of hundred years of war as the French (the invaders) and Germanic (the liberators) Armies waged b attle after battle in that region.
German surnames were not just arbitrarily chosen. When the edict was given that individuals m ust assume surnames, strict rules were established for the selection of such names. For "tru e Germans," there were but three choices: (1) Assume a name related to the trade or occupatio n of the head of the household. Thus the Bauers (farmers), Zimmermans (carpenters), Schäffers (shepards), etc. (2) Assume a name related to the place where the family lived. Thus the Schankweilers (weiler = village), the Lingelbachs (bach = stream), the Frankfurters, etc. Or, ( 3) Assume a surname that was based on being "the son of one whose father's given name was . This was done by adding the prefix "Von" to the father's given name. Thus the Von Brauns, the Von Eulers, or the Von Furstenberges (this being an example of a combination of the later two practices (i.e., son of the man from Furstenberg).
Finally, the Old german word for "camel" was "Wüstschiff" -- literally "ship of the desert.
