Emma was born June 28, 1916, in Temvik, N D to Jacob and Karoline (Tautmann) Bender. She was educated in a rural school. She married John Schiermeister, Jr, at Peace Lutheran Church in Linton, N D, October 16, 1938, and farmed in the Hazelton area for 22 years. They came to California in 1960 and Emma worked as an LVN in a local convalescent home here in Lodi. She also worked several seasons at Tri Valley Growers in the packing plant. Emma was an avid quilter and made quilts for other people and repaired many of them, giving some away to nieces and nephews and to children she baby sat. Emma won prizes for the quilting work she showed at quilt shows. She baby sat for children from infants to school age and many came back to visit her after graduating and leaving Lodi. She also loved gardening and growing flowers, especially African violets. Emma was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church for 32 years. Emma is survived by her sisters Elsie Schiermeister of Lodi; Bertha Myers of Bismarck, N D; Ruth McHattie of Colorado Springs, CO and Mildred Abbott of St. Paul, MN. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. Her husband John passed away in 1993. Emma was also preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and two brothers. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Monday, November 23, 2009, 1:00 P.M, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 420 So. Central Ave, Lodi, CA. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church Building Fund
