Herman Bauder, age 83, of Huron, died Friday, March 16, 2007, at his home.
His memorial service was Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at the American Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. A private burial was at the Riverside Cemetery.
Herman Bauder was born on February 25, 1924, at Alpena, South Dakota, to Jacob and Karlina (Lehr) Bauder. He graduated from Alpena School, and then attended Huron College. Herman started working with the Health Department for the City of Huron in 1948. He retired as the City Sanitarian in 1986, after 38 years.
On April 22, 1951, Herman married Jeanne Smith at Huron.
He was a 59 year member of the Huron Elks Lodge #444; was past president for the South Dakota State Sanitarians Association; and was a member of the Beadle County Weed Board. Herman was also a member of the Huron Area Antique Power Association; he was a volunteer at Prairie Village Railroad at Madison; and was a life member of Rocky Mountain Elk Association. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church. Herman and his wife Jeanne were honored in 2006 by the Huron 4-H Rodeo Association with a traveling bronze trophy.
Herman enjoyed antique auctions, restoring antiques, collecting railroad memorabilia, and did antique appraisals for banks, insurance companies, and individuals.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Edna Harrelson; four brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Jeanne of Huron; one sister, Esther Kinning of Huron; one brother, Arnold (Elaine) Bauder of Huron; one brother-in-law, William F. Smith, Jr. of Huron; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Smith of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and Aletha Tillman of Huron; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
