Esther Leona (Bauder) Kinning was born May 10, 1914, on the family farm north of Alpena, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Jacob and Karolina (Lehr) Bauder. She attended Beadle County Schools through the eighth Grade. She attended Stewart's School of Hair Styling in Sioux Falls, and then bought her own shop in Huron, Esther's Beauty Shop, above Humphrey's Drug Store.
On July 11, 1945, Esther married Robert "Buzz" Kinning, and they moved to Eagle Butte. They owned the John Deere store and the Standard Station in Eagle Butte. Esther opened the first beauty shop in Eagle Butte. She also worked in a drug store for several years.

She loved to read her devotionals and Bible, and did so until the day she went on Home to be with Jesus. In her Bible she wrote, "This is not my home, I am merely passing through."
