LaVera Florence Ottmar of Villa Care, Fort Dodge, Iowa passed away peacefully May 6, 2016 after a lengthy illness.
LaVera Florence Ottmar was born on December 24, 1921, the daughter of Oliver W. and Emma (Kramer) Bettenhausen in Wishek, North Dakota. She was one of seventeen children in the family and attended country school, graduating from high school in 1941. As a young adult, LaVera taught in a one-room schoolhouse and worked in a defense plant in Minneapolis during World War II.
On June 10, 1946, she married Albert A. Ottmar in Wishek and they farmed there for 25 years. LaVera was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wishek, where she served as Sunday school superintendent, member of the parish education board, and Sunday school and Bible school teacher.
In 1971, she moved with Albert and their children to Waverly, Iowa. She worked at Century Companies until her retirement in 1986. LaVera and Albert were active members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. They were avid bikers who enjoyed biking around town for pleasure and to run errands. LaVera loved music and playing favorite hymns on the piano or getting together with friends to play the guitar and sing. She felt at home in her garden and relished early-morning walks to hear the birds sing. LaVera was quiet and strong, with a kind and loving spirit as wide as the North Dakota prairie where she lived many years.
LaVera is survived by her four children, Arlen (Lois) of Iowa City; Jan (Fred) of Ft. Dodge; Lois (Karol) of Minneapolis; and Glenn of Bangkok, Thailand. She also is survived by 7 grandchildren: Adam, Rachel, Aaron, Sarah, Brandon, Nathan, and Neal; 2 great grandchildren, Caemon and Violet; and 9 brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, in 1999; four brothers, Howard, Charles, Warren, and Edgar; and three sisters, Pearl, Blanche, Corrine.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Joyce Sandberg officiating. Private burial will be held in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Waverly. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church and or to the St. Paul's Lutheran School in Waverly.
