Sunday morning, Sept. 6, 2009, Mark Layman and Riverside Hospice Aide Marie were quoting Psalm 23 at the bedside of Mark's wife, Ruth Mumma Layman. The moment they finished, the Good Shepherd reached out His hand and welcomed Ruth home.
On Sept. 23, 1914, Ruth was born in Mt. Joy (Florin), Pa., to Levi and Leah Mumma. She graduated from Messiah Bible College, Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing, and received her Bachelors degree from Elizabethtown College.
After graduation in 1948, she felt called to help the reconstruction efforts in war-ravaged Europe. There she met and fell in love with Mark Abram Layman. Married April 8, 1950, in Mt. Joy, the couple made their home in Denbigh. They were blessed with four children, Cindy (married to Wendell Crewe), twin sons, Don (married to Vickie) and Dennis (married to Violet), and Heidi (married to Charles Strauss). In addition to her brother, Adin and her beloved husband, Ruth is survived by 13 grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Ruth extended her spirit of caring to the nursing profession as a Nursing Instructor at Riverside School of Professional Nursing from 1950-1978. She and Mark served the Lord as volunteer prayer counselors at CBN for more than 25 years, and were lifelong members of Huntington Mennonite Church.
The family expresses sincere appreciation to the aides, nurses and Chaplaincy staff at Riverside Hospice, especially Jackie, Julie, Marie, Sarah and Mary, for their loving care for Ruth.
Viewing will be Friday, Sept. 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Warwick River Mennonite Church, 250 Lucas Creek Road, Newport News, with funeral to follow Saturday, Sept. 12, with a time of visitation at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jewish Voice, P.O. Box 31998, Phoenix, AZ 85046-1998.
