Zelda R. Hawbaker Laye, 89, of Julia Manor Health Care Center, Hagerstown, and formerly of Mercersburg, Pa., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at the center.
Born May 13, 1914, near Welsh Run, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John David and Mary Catherine Tolsten Hawbaker.
Her husband of 61 years, the Rev. Ernest E. Laye, died Nov. 16, 1996.
She was a member of Emmanuel Chapel of Smithsburg.
She assisted her husband in his ministry and taught summer Bible school at the Wolf building in Mercersburg.
She is survived by three daughters, Naomi B. Hornbaker and
Dorcas L. Pine, both of Mercersburg, and Elizabeth C. Litten of Fairplay; one son, the Rev. Jonathan D. Laye of Smithsburg; two sisters, Velenora Weller of Chambersburg, Pa., and Vera Orris of Shippensburg, Pa.; one brother, Ned Hawbaker of Sylvania, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by
one daughter, Rachel Laye; four sisters; two brothers; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg. The Revs. Jonathan D. Laye, Glen E. Hartman and David E. Pine will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
Viewing will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
