Otto E. Holmberg, age 100, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Butte Healthcare in Butte, Nebraska. He was born March 26, 1916, at Gregory, South Dakota to Emil and Bolena (Anderson) Holmberg.
Otto grew up in the Gregory and Dallas area before moving to a farm north of Gross, Nebraska. He attended grade school at Gross until 8th grade. Otto quit school to help his parents on the farm.
On October 7, 1942, Otto married the love of his life, Frances Pelc at the Rosedale Church rectory at Bristow. They were blessed with eleven children.
Otto and Frances lived on the family farm and milked cows. They enjoyed traveling. In the 1980’s, they moved to Bristow. Frances passed away in 2010, and Otto remained living in his home until 2015, before moving to Butte Healthcare.
Otto enjoyed telling stories about his growing up, walking the hills, hunting rabbits, and the dirty thirties. He also loved baseball. He would tell you how he played ball in Gross and the surrounding areas. Otto also loved to play the harmonica for his family.
Otto is survived by: his children, Rita (Jim) Haney, Shirley Wessel, Kathy Kemnitz, Clayton Holmberg, Marcy (Lou) Kerbel, Diane Mitchell, Cindy (Martin) Reiser, Judy (Terry) Reiser, and Eugene (Brenda) Holmberg; brother-in-law, Howard Pelc; 37 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and 16 step-great-grandchildren.
Otto was preceded in death by: his wife, Frances; sons, Richard and Wayne; sons-in-law, Dean Wessel and Jerome Kemnitz; four grandchildren, Wayne Haney, Amber Holmberg, Cally Kerbel, and James Reiser; four brothers; and five sisters.
Funeral services on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at Rosedale Covenant Church in Bristow. Burial in Rosedale Covenant Cemetery in Bristow.
