Notizen - Marie Sarvis, 88, of Pierre, died Friday, February 1 at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre. Services will be at 11:00am, Tuesday, February 5 at Faith Lutheran Church with Pastor Brad Urbach officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to services. Burial will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date
Marie was born June 3, 1924 in Virgil, SD to Mary and William Orth. She grew up in Virgil and attended school there until the 6th grade when her family relocated to Ft. Pierre. She graduated from Ft. Pierre High School as salutatorian in 1942.
She was united in marriage to Edwin Sarvis on September 1, 1945. Marie loved music and was an accomplished musician. She was an organist at Faith Lutheran Church for approx 35 years. She also served as a vocalist and sang at weddings and funerals as well as singing in the choir.
Her accomplishments were many. She worked at Boys State for several years. She was a member of the VFW auxiliary post 2038 where she served as the state secretary to the state president and also as assistant state musician.
She was instrumental in starting the South Dakota State Education Organization by being on the committee that started the organization and also served on the first board of directors where she was secretary. Marie was also on the board of directors for the Oahe Federal Credit Union and was a Hospice volunteer.
She is survived by her 3 children,three grandsons,two step-granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents and brother Theodore Orth.
