Gene was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army and loved the USA flag and what it stood for. He married Lois Tegelhutter on April 5, 1955 at St. John's church in Syracuse. He graduated from UNL, College of Agriculture in 1960 and then came home to begin his farming career in Otoe County.
He is survived by his wife Lois Watermeier of Unadilla; son Dan (Jean Ann) Watermeier of Syracuse; daughter Amy (Alan) Emshoff of Exeter; grandchildren Taylor (Kory) Kahlandt, Leslie (Ryan) McIntosh, Maddy & Meredith Emshoff, Rachel & Kaitlyn Watermeier; great grandchildren Oliver & Reagan McIntosh; sister Ruth Windhorst of Syracuse; brother Junior (Marlene) Watermeier of Burr; sister-in-law Dona Mae Watermeier of Lincoln; also numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother & sister-in-law Joy & Roleen Watermeier, brother Dale Watermeier, and brother-in-law Orville Windhorst.
He had a passion for family, agriculture, education and soil and water conservation. He truly loved connecting with people. He also loved attending his grandkids' many activities, music and singing, Garrison Keillor and following the NE Legislature. Most of all, he loved God.
Gene enjoyed serving on numerous boards, including Luther Memorial, the S-D-A school, Syracuse Foundation, Southeast Community College Board of Governors, Farm Credit Services, Burr Co-op, NE Farm Business, Grain Sorghum Board, U.S. Feed Grain Council, UNL Ag Alumni, and was recently inducted into the NE Hall of Agriculture Achievement.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M. and Thursday from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. all at the funeral home. Family will greet friends at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Syracuse from 6-8 P.M with a brief prayer service at 7 P.M. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Park Hill Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Dollars for Scholars (scholarship fund), the Syracuse or Unadilla Rescue Squad or Luther Memorial Church.
