The following is from the Clay County News, July 31, 1952:
UNEXPECTED DEATH OF 9-YEAR OLD BOY SADDENS AREA "The unexpected death of Ronnie Griess, nine-year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. Ben P. Griess, stunned and saddened the Sutton community. He died Sunday night at the farm of an uncle, Marvin Griess, after having collapsed in the yard where he had been playing only a few seconds before. Grief-stricken relatives give the following account of events leading up to his untimely demise. It was a typical family gathering. The adults were visiting in the house, while the children played in the yard. It is said that while playing, Ronnie accidentally ran into a little girl. She was knocked down, but the little boy managed to keep on his feet. He ran a few more steps, then fell. His playmates rushed to him, but Ronnie was unable to get up. The parents and other adults in the house were summoned. They picked up the boy and carried him into the house. A Sutton physician was called. Ronnie made three gasps for breath, then succumbed. Relatives said the doctor was unable to find any marks on the boy's body that might indicate an injury causing the death. He believed death must have been due to a heart attack. Ronnie was described as "a picture of health" by Mrs. Reuben A. Griess, who for the past three years has been his teacher at rural district 8 school in Fillmore County. She told the News Monday that she couldn't recall Ronnie having missed a day of school on account of illness. Ronnie had been a guest at the Reuben A. Griess home last week from Tuesday until Saturday night. The visit was timed so he could attend the Sutton Harvest Festival with the Griess boys. During his visit, he showed no sign of not feeling well, nor did he complain of not feeling well. Report of his death came as a terrific shock to the Reuben A. Griess family."
