Wenatchee World - Nov 16, 2006 -
After 98 years, 44 days, of a wonderful and remarkable life, Robert L. "Bob" English Sr. passed away on Monday, November 13, 2006, at Colonial Vista Care Center. He was born on September 30, 1908, in Oliver Springs, TN to Issac C. and Bertie (Scarbrough) English. In 1912, the family, including older brother, Homer, moved to Peshastin, WA. Dad graduated from Peshastin High School in a class of 5 in 1927.
While going to school, Dad learned how to be a meat cutter from Bill Towne in Peshastin. This became his profession and in 1928, the family moved to Wenatchee and Dad worked for Les E. Sloane. In 1929, Dad chased his beloved Ella to Santa Ana, CA and were married on February 11, 1929. They returned to the Northwest settling in Mount Vernon, WA for 1 1/2 years and then back to Wenatchee where they have resided ever since. Dad owned and operated the meat department and K & R Market, Washington Market and began his own grocery and meat market located at 5th and Chelan, called "Bob English's Food Shop" operated by Bob and Ella.
After selling the business in 1959, Dad went to work at S & M Service selling Jeeps and Ramblers for Don "Jeep" Miller, and later for Bud Westby Motors. Dad's best job he always said was, "announcing on the p.a. system for all the Wenatchee Chief games". He played softball in the Wenatchee Valley League and broke his arm sliding into third base. For many years, he played softball and bowled on many championship teams. For many years, he was the main umpire for both softball and hardball games. Dad and Mom loved to go to Fish Lake in the evenings after work and catch perch by the hundreds. They were Mr. Mrs. Santa Claus at Valley North Mall for several years.
After retirement, they were both active at the Wenatchee Senior Center, they were married for 72 years, Dad was a member of the Central Christian Church, Charter and Lifetime Member of North Central Washington Rifle and Pistol Club, and had been a member of the Eagles and Elks. Dad was one of the initial group involved in bringing television to the Valley via reflector on Badger Mountain. He was interested in many things and remained so until his final short illness.
Dad was preceded in death by his beloved Ella in January, 2002; his son, Robert L. "Bobby" English, Jr. in 1998; an infant son in 1946; his parents; brother, Homer and wife, Alice; and brother, Fred. He is survived by his son, Dennis and daughter-in-law, Sandy English; granddaughter, Paige (Todd) Demott and their son, Hunter; granddaughter, Taylor (Jason) Bills and their daughter, Delaney; his sister, Ethelyn English and sister, Patty (Elmer) Oberg, both of Wenatchee. Many nieces and nephews will also miss him greatly and will love "Uncle Bob" forever.
The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Rutherford for his years of caring for Dad, and for the staff of Colonial Vista Care Center, especially Wendy Bradford and Ryan who gave him special care and love as he went to join Mom and Bobby.
